Specialists in Reading & Writing Development

The Centre for Literacy & Learning is a tutoring service for students in Grades 1 through 8 who are struggling with reading and writing development.  Many of our students have been diagnosed with a reading/writing disability or dyslexia, while others are primary-level students who are not naturally acquiring early literacy skills and are seen as being ‘at risk’.

Our students typically love to listen to stories and they come from homes in which reading is valued. They are well-intentioned, motivated, and often very bright; however, they experience significant difficulty transforming printed symbols (letters) into a phonetic code.  We know that these children CAN learn to read – but they must be taught using programs that incorporate direct, explicit instruction, a step-by-step approach, and sufficient repetition and cumulative review.

Our goal is to provide our students with Structured Literacy Intervention that focuses on improving their basic skill levels in:

  • Phonological Awareness
  • Phonics & Word Recognition
  • Fluency
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Spelling & Written Expression

25+ years of serving clients in Oakville-Burlington and surrounding areas has shown us the power of evidence-based intervention for improving a child’s literacy skills, self-confidence, and belief in the capacity to overcome obstacles.  Our tutoring service can help unlock your child’s potential.

“If children can’t learn the way we teach, then we have to teach the way they learn.”
– Robert Buck

COVID-19 UPDATE

Keeping everyone safe is our utmost priority. Please note that safety protocols and protective equipment are in place for in-person sessions. In particular, we have taken the following steps:

Entrance Health Screening:  Anyone entering the building will be required to complete the Covid screening assessment.

Physical Distancing and Limited Capacity:  We have closed our pediatric toy room and have very limited seating in our waiting room.  In addition, we are staggering student tutoring hours so that there is minimum cross-traffic.  Finally, we are encouraging parents and caregivers to wait in their cars rather than in the waiting room.

Protective Equipment:  Masks must be worn in all areas of the office. Inside the tutoring room, there will be a plexiglass divider on the table for additional protection.

Cleaning/Sanitization:  There is a sanitizing station located at the front door.  We also have a designated washroom used only by clients of The Centre for Literacy & Learning. All shared surfaces and touch points will be disinfected by the tutor between clients.  Furthermore, clients will have their own binders and writing materials so these will not be shared among others.

Following Guidelines:  We are keeping up to date with regional guidelines to ensure that we are operating to the highest standard.

In the event of another shutdown to curb the number of Covid-19 cases, we will switch to online sessions in order to maintain the consistency required by our students.
